According to their artist's statement, Robert and Shana Parke-Harrison "create works in response to the ever-bleakening relationship linking humans, technology, and nature". They attempt to make clear the flaws they perceive in humanity's attempt to understand, interact with, and control the world around it. Mangled and clumsy contraptions, malformed hybrids of human and plant, and strange scenes of objects combined and suspended make up the bulk of their portfolio. The pair's work employs plain photography as well as computer editing. Many of their more surrealistic images, though based on photography, are heavily altered to achieve the morose, otherworldly atmosphere common in their work.
The first pieces I saw from them were from their series The Architect's Brother. The images, done in a decidedly sepia-toned 19th century-style of photography, follow the character as he clumsily attempts to understand and replicate the different aspects and processes of the natural world.
Definitely a very interesting duo with some strong concepts and strong pieces to back them up. Look through the rest of their work if you get the chance.
