Chinese artist Xia Xiaowan's recent work has really caught my eye. Inhye posted an article about him as a comment on a post I made about Justine Cooper, who uses a similar technique. Cooper takes the 2-dimensional 'slices' produced by MRI scans, prints them on clear plastic sheets, and stacks them to create a strange mix of 2-D and 3-D art. Xiaowan follows a similar process with his paintings.
He decides on an image, then sketches it. Based on the sketch, Xiaowan decides on the spatial dimensions of the 2-D image. Each layer is then painted onto the panes of glass and each pane set up onto the rack. I'm looking at using a similar technique. I've been printing on clear polyester this Summer and am trying to figure out a way to display the prints. I could mount the prints onto plexiglass and put them into a slot rack like Xiaowan. There are other options as well, but I need to figure the logistics of it all before I make a decision. Xiaowan has at least showed me one method that produces really successful, effectual pieces.
